There’s a popular leadership book called “Start with Why” that offers great insights. But for faith-driven leaders there is an even more crucial step that needs to come first.

As leaders, we often focus on strategizing, creating frameworks, and casting vision. We love exploring the questions of WHY, WHAT, and HOW.

But there is a vital step that should come first – Prayer. We need to intentionally align our plans with God’s heart.

Recently, a friend introduced me to the concept of “watch phrases” and it has been a game changer for me.

“Watch phrases” are a practical way to infuse prayer into the very fabric of our plans, from the first step to the last.

If you could consult with the most successful leader of all time, wouldn’t you?

That’s what “watch phrases” do-They connect us to the One whose wisdom is immeasurably greater than we can fathom. (ref. Ephesians 3:20)

We call them watch phrases because through them we are watching to see what God is up to. They help us to listen to His voice, and follow His direction.

I personally started utilizing the watch phrase, “Lord, what’s next?” and it has been transformative for me.

But don’t take my word for it. This concept has been practiced for thousands of years; we’re just putting a name to it.

Consider Samuel in the Old Testament, who called out to God saying, “Speak Lord, your servant is listening” (1 Samuel 3).  Or Mary, the mother of Jesus, who prayed “Let it be to me according to your Word” (Luke 1:38).

Are you thinking about what your watch phrase might be?

Here’s are some ideas:

  • “Not my will, but Yours be done.” (ref. Luke 22:42)
  • “Lead me in Your truth and teach me.” (ref. Psalm 25:5)
  • “Lead me Lord.”
  • “Lord, what are You saying?”
  • “Lord, what’s next?”
  • “Where You send me, I will go.”
  • “Speak Lord, Your servant is listening.” (ref. 1 Samuel 3:9)
  • “Let it be to me according to Your will.” (ref. Luke 1:38)

Mission statements are important; strategic plans are important… but watch phrases, they come first. Nothing is more impactful than starting with prayer.

What is your watch phrase?
